Waterproof Patch Cable Production Procedures

The production process of optical fiber patch cords generally includes several steps: cable cutting, threading of loose parts, stripping, insert fibers into ceramic ferrule, glue injection and heat oven,  crimping of patch cord boot and main body,  end face grinding, end face checking, IL RL testing, labeling, and shipment.

Waterproof Patch Cord Cable Type

Waterproof cables feature a central bundled tube structure with a black PE outer sheath for wear and UV resistance. A steel wire or FRP reinforcement core provides excellent support in the center. 2 core fiber cable, 4 core fiber cable are commonly used, with the same structure and size.

If the customer requires a 2 core fiber cable with connectors, there are two option in real production process:

Solution 1:If the length does not meet production standards, a 4 core fiber cable from stock will be used instead, with two of the fibers unused.

Solution 2: If the order quantity meets the requirements, a 2 core fiber cable can be manufactured in mass production, replacing two of the 4-core cables with filler cord.

The default diameter of the sub-unit is 2.5mm, and the color of the sub-unit can be specified. Conventionally, they are distinguished by four colors: blue, orange, green, and brown. If the customer specify, will color according to the customer’s requirements. For example, the four sub-units in the right picture are all orange.

Waterproof Function of Fiber Patch Cord Pigtails

The waterproof patch cord’s waterproofing is primarily based on several design features:

  • First, a layer of water-blocking yarn is placed between the outer sheath of the waterproof cable and the sub-cable. The water blocking yarn will expands upon contact with water, filling the entire space and providing a waterproof effect.
  • Second, the optical cable and waterproof plug are protected and sealed with heat shrink tubing (see picture in black).
  • Third, the metal waterproof plug itself has multiple waterproof rings (red or black). Furthermore, there is a sealing rubber ring at the entrance. This sophisticated design ensures an airtight joint.

Waterproof Plug Types

There are two types of waterproof plugs for outdoor fiber optic cable pre terminated: Copper and Aluminum.

Both types meet IP68 protection grade, and are suitable for cable diameter maximum 10mm, round shape. The cable tension strength 0~15kg.

There are quality sealing rings around the connector body and 1 sealing plug inside of the joint to ensure stable waterproof function.

If not specify, will configure with aluminum joint for your order. 

Pre Terminating Fiber Optic Cable With Patch Cord Connector

Waterproof fiber optic cables can be terminated at one or both ends and are often found in outdoor fiber optic terminal boxes, connecting optical fibers to equipment terminals. The commonly used optical connectors are fiber connector SC or FC.

  • Patch cables are terminated at both ends and are used directly to connect equipment ports.
  • Fiber pigtails have a fiber connector on one end and exposed fiber coreson the other end, which requires fiber cable splicing.

Other Waterproof Outdoor Patch Cords

Some fiber optic pigtails are specifically designed for waterproof applications, such as armored waterproof cable and field cables, suitable for environments like mines and outdoor base stations.

For example, ODVA base station armored fiber optic pigtails support IP67 waterproofing, or mining-grade MINI SC waterproof pigtails.
