The transmission distance of single mode optical modules vary from 2 km to hundreds of km. Multimode SFP transceivers typically have a transmission distance between several hundred meters to 2km.
The wavelength selection for SFP modules mainly depends on the transmission distance and fiber type. Common wavelengths are 850nm, 1310nm, and 1550nm. 1490nm/1510nm/1590nm wavelengths are often used in bidirectional (BiDi) optical modules or wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM/CWDM) technologies to support long-distance transmission in specific scenarios.
SR is 850nm multimode fiber 300m, DR is single mode short distance 500m,FR is CWDM wave max. 2km, LRM is mulitmode short distance 220m, LR is single mode 1310nm 10km, ER is single mode fiber 40km, and ZR is single mode fiber 1310nm to 80km.
Optical module type can be differ from the pack type: SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP, QSFP28, QSFP-DD, OSFP, etc.
Single-mode fibers typically have multi-colored Bail clasp: blue (1310nm), yellow or green (1550nm), purple (1490nm, 1470nm), gray (1470nm), and brown (1610nm). Multimode fibers at 850nm are generally black or white.
