How to choose the DAC cable length and AWG wire diameter?

The smaller the AWG number, the thicker the corresponding cable diameter, and the longer the transmission distance. Below are recommendations for commonly used transmission distances and their corresponding wire diameters:

✅When using Intel network cards, if choosing a 3-meter twinax SFP cable, a 26AWG thick cable is required; otherwise, unstable connections may occur. For lengths less than 3 meters, a 30AWG thin cable can be used.

✅When interconnecting with Cisco switches, a 5-meter length of 30AWG thin cable can be used. This is because Cisco incorporates sufficient compensation design in its switch chips, significantly reducing the cost.

1310nm and 1550nm optical module have different loss and dispersion, transmission distance are differ a lot. Please choose as per your need.

  • 1310nm fiber loss at 35dBm/km, used for transmission distance less than 40km, high loss and low dispersion;
  • 1550nm fiber loss at 2dBm/km, can transmit 120km, so >40km, low loss and high dispersion.

There are two networking  in computing center: IB protocol, Ethernet protocol

  • IB protocol use 400G-OSFP-SR4 and 800G-OSFP-SR8 for matching interconnection
  • Ethernet use 400G-QSFP-DD, or QSFP-112 for matching interconnection
  • Inside the machine room: 150M or 300M SR4; short distance module, MPO interface-multimode SR4, LC interface-multimode LX4

400G and 800G ACO cables was shipped in batches starting in 2024 with double assurance:

  1. All laser and DSP chips are Broadcom solutions, the most stable solution among mainstream solutions.
  2. Are all products tested with NVIDIA 9790 network cards or switch, delivered after 100% qualified.

Immersion type from 10G to 400G is mass-produced already, whether single mode or multi mode. Pure immersion type multi-mode is more common, because multi-mode is more widely used in big data integration and computing power data centers. Immersion type liquid-cooled optical modules are more suitable for small clusters with large capacity. 10G, 25G, 40G, 100G, 200G, 400G.
