Single mode Gigabit 1000Base-LX devices use single mode laser sources. Because single mode laser sources are highly collimated, they often produce an under-emission state when coupled into a multimode fiber, resulting in uneven optical power distribution across all fiber modes.
Using a “Mode Conditioning Patch Cable” or “Mode Conditioning Patch Cord,” laser light can be launched into a single mode fiber and then coupled into a multimode fiber that is off-center relative to the single-mode fiber core. This allows for the excitation of a large number of modes in the fiber, weighting the mode groups that are highly excited due to overfilled launch conditions while avoiding the excitation of mode groups with similar power levels that are far apart. This enables the laser transmitter to operate at gigabit speeds on multimode fiber without being limited by the DMD.

The easiest way to tell the difference is by looking at the cable's outer sheath color. Singlemode is yellow, multimode is orange, aqua, purple, rose red, or lime green. If customize color, refer to the printing mark on the cable jacket: SM, 9um for singlemode fiber patch cable, MM 50um, 62.5um for multimode fiber patch cable.
It is not recommended to use them together due to differences in transmission modes and performance mismatches. This can lead to intermittent disconnections, link failures, or device damage, unless it is a short-term emergency measure over a short distance where no other solution is available.
When connecting a single mode gigabit 1000Base LX device to a multimode patch cable, make sure to connect the yellow connector (single mode fiber) of the mode conditioning cable to the transmitting end of the device(TX), the orange connector (multi mode fiber) to the receiving end of the device(RX). The other ends of the mode conditioning cable connect the same as this way.
