Fiber coupler is to remove the coating of two or more fibers and bring them close together, then axially stretch them under high temperature molten state to form a tapered coupling area, and achieve a specific splitting ratio by controlling the stretching speed and torsion angle. Due to process limitations, a single taper can only produce ≤1×4 FBT splitters, and a higher number of channels requires cascading multiple 1×2 couplers and integrated packaging. Currently, the most in-demand product on the market is the 1×2 fiber coupler.

And furthermore, if in a laser-related application, recommended to use a polarization-maintaining splitter with an extinction ratio of >20dB to avoid polarization state distortion affecting gain efficiency.
