3 Types of MTP MPO Fiber Breakout Cable for Data Center Interconnection

MTP and MPO optical cable are widely used in high-density cabling within data centers. Depending on their specific application, MPO MTP patch cord can be categorized into MTP trunk cable, MTP MPO Harness Cable, MTP and MPO crossover cable.

This article will introduce three commonly used types of MPO MTP breakout patch cords for data center interconnection:

3 types of mtp mpo fibertrunk cable

Type 1: MPO/MTP -2*MPO/MTP Trunk Cable

This MTP MPO fiber breakout cable features a single MPO 16 fiber connector at one end and two MPO 12 fiber connectors at the other, it is MPO 16 to MPO 12 fiber cable (base-8 structure).

Modern high-speed optical modules typically feature a higher number of channels; this MTP MPO fiber breakout cable enables the physical splitting of such modules into two independent, lower-speed links. For example, it allows for the splitting of a single 800G QSFP-DD/OSFP port (use 16 fibers, 800G DR8/SR8) into two 400G QSFP-DD ports (each use 8 fibers, 400G DR4), or for connecting a single 400G module (e.g., a 400G QSFP-DD SR8 optical module, 16 fibers) to two 200G modules (e.g., 200G QSFP56 SR4 optical modules, 8 fibers).

This facilitates the migration from legacy 100G/200G data center architectures to newer 400G/800G architectures, as well as 800G network interconnectivity within AI computing centers, thereby simplifying cabling and reducing cable congestion within server racks.

Type 2: MPO/MTP -3*MPO/MTP Trunk Cable

The MTP MPO fiber breakout cable features a single MPO 24 connector at one end and three MPO 8 connectors at the other, making it suitable for use within BASE-24 architecture links. It enables legacy MPO 24 fiber cable to seamlessly connect to three modern MPO 8 core network ports without the need for re-cabling. As a core tool for achieving 100% fiber utilization in high-density data centers, it is widely deployed in the structured cabling systems of 40G and 100G data center environments.

1) 40G / 100G Data Center Structured Cabling Applications

Both the 40G QSFP+ SR4 and 100G QSFP28 SR4 optical fiber modules feature four parallel bidirectional data channels; a 24-fiber 1-to-3 MPO fiber patch cord allows for the full utilization of a MPO 24 fiber cable.

2) Connecting 120G CXP and 40G QSFP+ SR4 Optical Fiber Modules

The 40G QSFP+ SR4 optical fiber module supports four transmit and four receive bidirectional data channels, with each individual channel supporting a data rate of 10G. The 120G CXP optical fiber module supports 12 parallel bidirectional data channels, with each individual channel also supporting a data rate of 10G; therefore, a single 120G CXP optical fiber module can support three 40G interfaces.

Type 3: 2*MPO/MTP -3*MPO/MTP Trunk Cable

The MTP MPO fiber breakout cable features two 12 fiber MTP connector at one end and three MTP 8 connectors at the other. It serves as a core component in high-density data centers, enabling a seamless transition from a Base-12 cabling architecture to Base-8 switch ports without the need to replace expensive backbone cables. It is widely used in and for upgrading from10G to 40G, 100G, and 400G cabling solutions.

1) 40G to 10G Data Center Structured Cabling Applications

In 40G to 10G structured cabling systems, a 2x MTP to 3x MTP jumper is applied to connect three 40G QSFP+ SR4 optical receiver modules at one end. The other end connects to twelve 10G SFP+ SR optical receiver modules via two LC to MPO cables, thereby facilitating network upgrades within a BASE-12 network architecture.

2) 40G/100G Data Center Structured Cabling Applications

Both 40G QSFP+ SR4 and 100G QSFP28 SR4 optical receiver modules feature four parallel, bi-directional data channels. By using 2x MTP to 3x MTP jumper, it is possible not only to interconnect three 40G/100G optical receiver modules based on a BASE-12 link structure but also to ensure the full utilization of fiber resources.

Conclusion

When selecting multi-fiber MPO MTP trunk cable, it is quite different from standard patch cords. Please do pay close attention to the following three points, otherwise, the link connection cannot be established:

  • A MTP male connector must be paired with a MTP female connector.
  • Strict attention must be paid to polarity requirements, type A, type B or type C.
  • Fiber type: single mode and multi-mode fiber
