During the factory production or use of MTP MPO patch cable, we often find that bundled cables are used instead of ribbon cables. Why is this?
Below you will find answer in detail from the force and loss of optical cables during the production, transportation and use of optical cables.
Ribbon cable is with ribbon fibers in the center, and then wrapped with kevlar and plastic cable sheath, and ribbon fiber is arranged in a row, generally 8 or 12 cores, directly forming a row of ribbons. The outer diameter of a bare fiber is 250um, so the width of the 12-core ribbon fiber is 12x250um, which is about 3.0mm. This determines that the shape of the ribbon fiber optic cable is rectangular or elliptical, and its cross section (length x width) is shown in the figure below:

Generally speaking, the number of ribbon fibers arranged in a row will not exceed 12. If it is a 24-core ribbon cable, two rows of 12-core ribbon fibers must be overlapped and placed in a 4.5×2.4mm optical cable.
However, during the transportation process, 24 cores optical cables are rolled up on cable reels for transportation, which will bring a problem. Due to the overlapping of the two rows of ribbon fibers, once they are continuously wound into a circle and then straightened, the inner row of ribbon fibers will be shorter than the outer row of ribbon fibers, resulting in the difference in inner and outer diameters, which will lead to inconsistent lengths of the two rows of ribbon fibers after the optical cable is loosened.
More importantly, during the processing, the optical cable is wound into a circle with a diameter of about 25cm and then processed into a mpo 24 connector. After the 24 fiber mpo connector is packaged, if it is straightened at the user end, the inner and outer diameter effects will be more obvious. Once straightened, the ribbon fiber will be subjected to stress, resulting in a significant impact on the insertion loss. The longer the length, the more serious the inner and outer diameter effects will be. During use, the two rows of ribbon fibers will inevitably be subjected to mutual stress, affecting performance and use.
Therefore, based on this point, basically no one will use 24 core ribbon cable to produce mpo mtp 24 fiber optic patch cord.
At present, because bundled 3.0mm mini cable can perfectly solve the above problems and are more convenient to use, bundled cables are replacing ribbon cables. No matter it is mpo 8 connector, mtp mpo 12 connector, mpo 16 connector or mtp 24 fiber patch cable, fewer and fewer customers demand ribbon cables.
