Sky terminal also called aerial terminal, that is the fiber optic spool which connected to the drone. It can either include a built-in sky module or not. The sky module is the component used to transmit signals. If it includes a sky module, you will see a data interface and a green sticker at the bottom of the fiber optic cable reel for easy identification.

How to connect the GBD module with the flight controller?

There are two main ways to connect the aerial module and the flight controller: one is through a wireless Wi-Fi connection to transmit signals, and the other is through a wired connection. As shown in the image below:

How to connect the Ground Terminal and Sky Terminal?

  • Firstly, connect the sky module with the fiber spool with a cable pin, according the below diagram to connect each ports.
  • Secondly, bring the fiber out of the fiber spool, and connect it with the top optical interface of the ground module, the normal connector is FC UPC connector.
  • Finally, we can use wireless or cable to connect with the flight controller and video monitor.

Install Fiber Optic Cable Reel Onto The Drone

Important Notes:

  • 1. When installing the fiber optic reel, the fiber optic cable outlet should be kept as far away from the propeller as possible, but extra attention should be paid to the center of balance of the aircraft.
  • 2. The fiber optic cable reel should be installed according to the aircraft’s tilt angle. The mounting bracket should be designed with a certain tilt angle (as shown in the figure). The installation angle should be close to the tilt angle to ensure the fiber optic cable exits horizontally.
  • 3. The fiber optic spool is coated with special adhesive. The first 200 meters of the cable are the adhesive-coated area.  In this area, the aircraft’s flight speed should be controlled to within 30 km/h or 8 m/s to avoid high-speed flight in the adhesive-coated area.
  • 4. The maximum flight speed of the aircraft should be controlled to within 120 km/h.
  • 5. Do not allow the fiber optic cable to come into contact with water, otherwise, optical attenuation will occur, resulting in a decrease in optical transmission quality.

Operating Precautions

  1. Fiber optic protection: Avoid excessive bending to prevent signal loss.
  2. Environmental requirements: Store in a dry and well-ventilated place, avoiding high temperatures and humidity.
  3. Standard operation: Strictly follow the procedures to connect the equipment and ensure flight safety.
  4. Before using the fiber optic cable reel, be sure to remove the transport protective ties, the carbon fiber rod and protective clips. The fiber optic cable will break if you try to pull it out without removing the clips.
  5. The protection cover on the FC connector at the cable reel’s output port must be removed before use. Pull out the fiber optic connector and connect it to the FC interface of the ground-side module. After connecting, ensure the connectors are properly aligned and tighten the connector.
  6. Before using the fiber optic FC interface, please clean the fiber optic connector with a cleaning pen.
  7. If the output optical attenuation value is greater than -15dBm, its use is not recommended.
