MPO/MTP Cable Advantages And Application

With high speed data transmission demand in data centers, traditional fibre patch cords cannot meet the connection requirements, now we should need high density and better store more data in a limited space. However, the normal connector SC FC LC ST can not meet such request, so there were MTRJ, E2000 or MU connectors, and during these 10 years, MPO/MTP connectors are more popular.

MTP MPO Fiber Patch Cable Structure

MTP to MTP fiber cable are multi core fiber optic cable with MTP connectors at both ends. MTP fiber connectors are composed of optical fibers, cable sheaths, coupling components, metal rings, pins, dust caps, etc., guide pins are divided into male and female types, both are different from the MT ferrule. There are 2 guide pins with diameter 0.7mm at top of the MT ferrule for MPO male connector, white 2 guile holes for the MPO female connector. And MTP optical fiber connectors is mating precisely and aligned through the two pins, one side is MPO male connector, the other side is MTP female connector.

Fiber polarity of MPO/MTP® Patch cable

  • Type A (straight-through): the alignment key of the MTP connectors are opposite – key up to key down.MTP patch cable fiber at both ends are in the same sequence, fiber 1 at one end to fiber 1 at the other end, and fiber 12 at one end to fiber 12 at the other end.
  • Type B (Crossed) : the alignment key of the MTP connectors are the same- key up to key up or key down to key down.The cable MTP fiber sequence at both ends are arranged in the opposite position, fiber 1 at one end to fiber 12 at the other end, and fiber 12 at one end to fiber 1 at the other end.
  • Type C (crossed in pair): the alignment key of the MTP connectors are the same position- key up to key up or key down to key down, but adjacent fiber sequence are crossed in pair. That means the fiber 1 at one end to the fiber 2 at the other end, fiber 2 at one end to fiber 1 at the other end; and 11 to the fiber 12 at the other end, and fiber 12 to the fiber 11 at the other end.

MPO/MTP Cable Adavantages

MPO MTP Cable Application

At present, MTP to MTP fiber cable are mainly used for data center room wiring. With the release of the new Ethernet 40G/100G standard of IEEE 802.3ba in June 2010, the high-speed transmission of 40G and 100G will not only rely on the extremely expensive WDM transmission of single-mode, but also adopt the multi-channel parallel transmission of OM3 and OM4 multi-mode fibers. Compared with the single mode WDM transmission, the overall cost of this multi-mode parallel transmission method in 40G/100G is only 1/3 and 1/10 of the single-mode system, which shows that the cost advantage of multi-mode is very obvious.

Precautions for using MTP patch cord

1. Ensure that the MPO patch cords are not knotted, bent, entangled, stretched or squeezed.

2. Regularly check whether the fiber patch cords have creases and connector damage.

3. Accurate labeling is required on the wiring infrastructure, no matter it is patch cord, cassette or the wiring panel.

4. Since optical fiber is very fragile, the outer sheath of the optical cable and Kevlar are used as the reinforcing core and protective layer. If the wrapping of the MTP fiber patch cords is too tight, the optical cable will be deformed or even press the optical fiber inside. The deformation of the optical fiber will increase the attenuation.
