At present, the demand for 400G optical modules is growing rapidly, and the demand for 800G optical network products for high-speed, high-density ports and low-latency data center interconnections (DCI) is also gradually expanding. Yingda photonic can provide a full range of 10G, 25F, 40G, 100G, 200G, 400, 800G high-speed cable products, including AOC cable, DAC cable, ACC cable, AEC cable, etc.
However, in the process of communicating with customers, many customers are confused about QSFP-DD and OSFP. What do they mean? Hope below brief summary can help you in some way.
Development trend of optical module packaging
Optical modules are optoelectronic devices that realize photoelectric conversion and electro-optical conversion in optical communications, and are the core components of the optical communication industry. The overall evolution of optical module packaging is towards higher speed, miniaturization, and hot plugging, from the previous GBIC packaging, to the smaller SFP packaging, and then to the current 800G QSFP-DD and OSFP packaging.
The main application scenarios include Ethernet, CWDM/DWDM, connectors, fiber channel, wired access and wireless access, and the sub-scenarios cover the data communication market and the telecommunications market.

800G optical module packaging
800G optical modules can receive 8 billion bits per second, which is more than twice the usage of the previous generation (400G) optical modules. QSFP-DD and OSFP are two packaging methods for 800G optical modules. The approximate appearance is as follows:

Package 1: 800G QSFP-DD
QSFP-DD is currently the preferred package for 800G optical modules. The 800G QSFP-DD optical module is a double-density four-channel small pluggable high-speed module that enables data centers to efficiently grow and expand cloud capacity as needed. The QSFP-DD module are with 8-channel electrical interface, each channel can transmit signals at max. 25Gb/s (NRZ modulation) to reach 200Gbps data rates, or 50Gb/s (PAM4 modulation) to reach 400Gbps data rates,.
Advantages of 800G QSFP-DD
- QSFP-DD is backward compatible and compatible with QSFP+/QSFP28/QSFP56 QSFP packages.
- 2. QSFP-DD adopt 2×1 stacked integrated cages and connectors, so it can support single-height and double-height cage connector system.
- 3. With SMT connectors and 1xN cages, cage design and optical module housing optimization can achieve a thermal capacity of at least 12W per module. Higher thermal capacity can reduce the heat dissipation requirements of optical modules, thereby reducing some unnecessary costs.
- 4.The MSA working group with QSFP-DD package fully considered the use flexibility, adopted ASIC design, multiple interface rates can be ok, and backward compatible with QSFP+/QSFP28, so it can reduce the port costs and equipment deployment costs.
Package 2: 800G OSFP
OSFP is a new type of optical module package type, which is much smaller than CFP8 but slightly larger than QSFP-DD. It is with 8 high-speed electrical channels, on 1U front patch panel, it can use 32pcs OSFP interfaces. With the integrated heat sink, the heat dissipation performance can be greatly improved.
Advantages of 800G OSFP
1. The OSFP module is designed as 8 channels, supporting up to 800G total throughput, thus achieving higher bandwidth density.
2. Since the OSFP package supports more channels and higher data transmission rates, it can provide higher performance and support longer transmission distances.
3. The OSFP module is with heat dissipation hole design, better for higher power consumption and higher rates like 1.6T or higher.

How to choose 800G optical module for your data center?
To choose the right 800G optical module for your network application, various factors must be carefully evaluated, including transmission distance, fiber type, form factor, etc. QSFP-DD is usually preferred in telecommunications applications, and OSFP is considered more suitable for data center environments.
800G QSFP-DD AOC active optical cable and 800G OSFP DAC direct attach cable are suitable for high-speed network environments such as data centers, cloud computing, and large networks to meet the needs of high-bandwidth and large-capacity data transmission.

800G OSFP AOC optical cable and DAC copper cable direct attach are suitable for network environments that require high bandwidth and large-capacity data transmission, such as data centers, cloud computing, and ultra-large-scale networks.

Conclusion
With the continuous advancement and innovation of technology, 800G optical modules and high-speed cable products will play a greater role in practical applications and promote the rapid development of the digital communication field.
